It's Beginning to Look a lot like Christmas...

We got the decorations up this past weekend. I like these two little trees. We put them in the corner of the music room. They don't get decorated. They just light up the space as is. The great thing about all these pictures is that the Big Guy took them. He walked around while the boys and I were rummaging through the boxes.

Peanut did quite a bit of work on the tree.


I did the mantle adding the lighted garland this year.

I added the garland to the stairs too!

I got everything finished on Monday. The boxes are all put away. It is so nice to sit back and enjoy it!

On Tuesday, Pumpkin sang with his choir at the Peabody Hotel. It was gorgeous and the perfect event to put you in the season.



It all worked out. The Big Guy's meeting was cancelled. I swung by his work and picked him up. This photo is one of my favorites for the 2009 Holiday Season.

Yesterday, I had a few friends over for a holiday lunch. We started a play group years ago keeping up the lunch even though the kids are in school. It marked the beginning of the festiviities for us! We exchanged gifts. I made these log cabin washcloths that were on purlbee. They were a fun knit and I improved my skill of picking up stitches.

I struggled with what to put with them. Then, it hit me. I included the Dawn Foam, my favorite dishwashing soap.

It was great to see them. As usual, there was not enough time to catch up on everything.

We are off and running for the next event. We host David's work team here for lunch tomorrow. I've got grocery shopping to to!

Singing, Knitting, and Food

A few weeks ago, Pumpkin auditioned for the All SouthWest TN Jr chorus. It is comprised of 7-9 graders. He's had the honor of participating each year. This year was no exception. He ended up 2nd chair in the Tenor 1 section! This year the choir performed at the Canon Center, the performing arts venue in Memphis. It is amazing. Here he is before the final line up. There is an artistic scuplture outside the back door. I am so thankful he got to participate. The talent is amazing. He is listening to the CD of the Jr and Sr choirs as I am writing this. Guest conductors come in from around the nation. They do a phenom job with the kids. If I could quickly figure out how to upload the music to link it to my blog, I would. But, there is not enough time in the day!

The music was playing in our house - not really! I moved some chairs around ending up with a need in the playroom. I landed this chair and ottoman off of Craigslist. It is just perfect.


I am going to have it reupholstered in this fabric.

The plan was to have it done for Christmas. Unfortunately, the oven and the refrigerator are acting up! I have to see what the damage is from those needy appliances before I forge down the path to make a new chair out of something old. For the time being, the rocker is staying in the playroom. This "new" chair is in the guest room and matches perfectly!

We enjoyed Thanksgiving at my sister-in-laws. I brought a pumpkin spice chocolate chip cake (thanks to my neighbor's oven!) I wanted to do something else. So, I pulled out my needles and knit dishcloths for each family attending the dinner. I love the ballband pattern. I just put scraps of yarn together. It is fun to see how they turn out. I got them all done except for one. I had to give my mother-in-law hers on my needles! She was very understanding. I did get hers done the next day and gave it to her on Saturday.

On Sunday morning after mass, we headed to downtown Memphis for breakfast at the Arcade. It is the oldest restaurant in the city. Phew! They have been through it all. They are just a few streets down from where MLK was shot. Look at this hot chocolate. What a treat!

The plates were essentially licked clean. It was fun to explore a new place. The boys enjoyed it - even as they try to frown! We added the Arcade to our list of possibilities when we have guests in town.

I am getting a little nervous about how close Christmas really is. I have lots of knitting to do. We have to decorate and we are entertaining here at the end of next week. Did I mention that my oven does not work? I know. It will all work out!!

Day After Thanksgiving

We had a lovely Thanksgiving.

The Big Guy's brother and family came in to town. We had a great meal at my sister-in-law's. The food was grand!

The boys and my other sister-in-law started the day with a four mile run. Some of the boys did it as a relay passing the smoked turkey leg. Love it! The weather was fab. The turnout was great - all for the March of Dimes.

We were so lucky. My oven went out and won't be fixed for a few days. I used a neighbor's oven to fix my dessert. That was all I needed to bring to the dinner. Thank goodness for a toaster oven! It will help us through the next few days.

Weekend Wow!

Where did this week go?

Peanut finished up his fall soccer season. Phew! It was cold.
Peanut participated in a Civil War demo at school. He was a POW from Elmira prison camp.
Peanut has basketball, family Turkey toss, referring, conditioning, school play, and friends. Phew! Busy, busy, busy...

Pumpkin sang in the All West TN Chorus last weekend. Beautiful music!
Pumpkin had lots of homework.
Pumpkin has a swim meet. He's worked very hard and we hope to see the result in faster times.

The Big Guy and I are providing the transportation to all the activities this weekend.

I have TONS of knitting to do. I hope to make lots of progress - on the flip side - have a good one!

Update

I can't believe it has been 10 days since my last post. Time is flying by. We've been busy and I've spent lots of time with my knitting needles.

Let me share some of the things we've been doing.

Peanut participated in his school fundraiser about a month go. Last week, he got an award for running the most laps. He ran 42 laps in 30 minutes. Each lap is 1/8 of a mile. Wow! We were excited for him. He matched the school record. Yahoo!!

The school district has a fundraiser run each fall. It was last weekend. Peanut and the Big Guy participated. It is a flat run and it turned out to be quite hot. Peanut did well and had fun. Here he is just starting. I could only dream to have a running form like that.

If you look past the green shirt, you can see him finish. He looked strong!

The Big Guy finished strong too. He said the heat impacted him a bit.

My two twinkies! They wore the school tshirt and the Vandy shorts. Love it!

I took Pumpkin to the ortho for his last visit. How exciting is that? We were surprised to learn Peanut had won the contest for October. He gets to pick up his prize soon.

Our tried and true Volvo keeps plugging along. A few days ago it hit 170k. Wow! We had to get new tires for it. Other than that, it is going strong. Buddy loves it and is always ready to hop in the back and go for a ride!!

Projects and Halloween

I have been knitting as of late! I can't show all my projects, but I am in the process of figuring out what to make for Christmas gifts. I had some of this yarn left over from Knitcol. I love it. The self-striping just makes be smile especially in this fingerless mitten pattern. I still have to make the mate. It shouldn't take long.

I finally finished up a pair of fingerless mittens for the Big Guy. His office is pretty cold in the winter. We are hoping these will keep his fingers warm when he is at the computer. I did not have enough green. I like the addition of the off white.

Last Thursday night was Pumpkin's fall chorale concert. It was wonderful. I am so pleased with everything his director does with the kids. This is his first tux. We tried to order it big to allow for growing up and out room.

We quickly moved on to Halloween! This year Peanut served himself on the table. The costume was easy to make. It just was not too industrious. He was the hit at his costume party. He took home a 1st Place ribbon!!! The bowl lasted a few minutes at the party and the table stayed on for 45 minutes. I know he had fun with it. He said that kids were trying to eat the gummy worms hot-glued on the plates. Too Funny!!


This shot was taken when he got to the party. This party was amazing. There were boys and girls there. And, they had a DJ. Peanut actually danced. He did come home complaining that it was too loud. Apparently, girls were talking to him and he could not hear them. That's his story and he is sticking to it!!

On Halloween morning, Peanut and the Big Guy did the Race for the Cure. The weather was perfect and they both finished strong. I was the designated photographer and the holder of all they clothes they shed.

Pumpkin had his first high school swim meet. It was a fun format consisting only of relays.

Both boys were off to different Halloween parties. The Big Guy and I took advantage. We headed out to dinner and did a little shopping. A great Halloween was had by all!!

Tickled Pink

Last week Peanut's school declared 10/22/09, Tickled Pink day. The kids were supposed to wear a pink shirt with khakis. It was in honor of October being Breast Cancer awareness. Each child who wore pink brought in two cans goods. What a great way to to help stock the local pantry. Peanut did not have any pink shirts. He raided my closet and found this tshirt from a neighborhood cancer event a few years ago. He wore my pink socks too.


They are into Red Ribbon Week this week. Each day they got to wear something special increasing the awareness to say NO to drugs. Today is "Turn Your Back on Drugs." They got to wear their tshirts backwards. He donned his Yankees shirt. Pretty funny for a Phillies fan, huh?
