Freedom Train

Today I went with my third grader on a field trip to see Freedom Train. The children got to travel in style on chartered buses! It was wonderful. Apparently the school buses' schedules are so tight that is makes it hard to use them for a field trip. It cost a bit more, but it was well worth it.

The weather here is just about freezing and we've had our share or rain. We weren't sure we'd get to go, but we did!

Theatreworks travels around the country putting on these plays. I really liked this story. The set was minimal creatively using pieces in different ways capturing your imagination. I learned some interesting facts about the underground railroad. This may be one of the first times I have really paid attention to the text in the spirituals that the slaves sung. It is very moving.

It was a good show. My only complaint was the sound was turned up high making the audio very loud. I am not sure how much my son got out of the show. I'll have to ask more questions this evening when he gets home from school. Watching the performance made me want to go rent Roots and watch that again. We went to the Freedom Center in Cincinnati when it opened a few years ago. It is worth a visit. I know that slavery, in different forms, still exists in parts of the world. My prayer is for freedom!

Cycling Safety

A prominent US cyclist, David Zabriskie, started an initiative, Yield to Life, to increase cycling awareness promoting the protection of cyclists as well as safe cycling. It makes lots of sense covering the cyclists responsibility and the driver's responsibility.

My husband is an avid cyclist. He was hit by a car last spring. Fortunately, he did not suffer any injuries. His type of hit even has a special name in bike-speak. It is that common. I, of course, can't remember what the term is. He was minding his own business riding 20 mph down a flat, six lane road, in the right hand lane. A car sped up and turned right right in front of him. The driver assumed he was turning. It was not a turning lane. He was peddling his tail off with his arms down in the drops. I wonder what gave her the impression he was turning?? There was an angel sitting on his shoulder that morning. Someone was looking out for the driver too. My husband wiped himself up off the blacktop, checked himself out and was okay. The driver was an absolute mess!! Her mental state was enough punishment - in my husband's eyes. He did buy a new helmet, re-wrapped the handle bars and had the bike checked out. It was his lucky day.

In the last few days, I have thought about doing a family biking trip this summer. They range from luxury on wheels to just your set of wheels. I am intrigued by the rides across states. I just don't know. That is way out of my comfort zone riding a bike for 5-7 consecutive days. I am pretty sure the little boys could do their share. I just don't know about the mom. I am going to research it a bit more and see what we come up with. The rides are on roads albeit roads less traveled. The bike safety would be paramount with the boys.

It sure would be great way to make sure I was out there riding everyday!!!

What a Difference a Day Makes

Yesterday we woke to pouring down rain, but it was quite warm.
It rained all day.
Then, the wind picked up. It felt like the we were in Kansas with Dorothy!
There was a high wind warning through the night. And, the cold air rushed in.
The power went out at the pool and Pumpkin's swim practice got done early.
We lost power at 4 am for about a half hour. I slept through it until my hubby decided to turn on the light verifying the REAL time. He said that he was awake from the time it went off. I normally hear the CO detectors when the power goes, but last night I was sleeping like a baby:)
We awoke to clear skies but cold temps. Old man winter is still here. We have lots of branches to pick up in the backyard. Amazingly, there doesn't seem to be any other damage.

The sky was very intimidating. There were so many layers of dark clouds. The wind was swirling and the sun was trying to peak through as it set.

The pictures don't depict it all. The clouds were moving quickly, but were very omnipotent.

If you strain, you might see a bud on the crape myrtle. There are a few signs that spring is not that far away!

My Afternoon Review

I got the painting done in the laundry room by the frig nook. I only have a tiny bit of paint left and will have to squeak out a second coat on the one wall. So, I went to the paint place and got a can of that

in that same historical color, Bleeker Beige. I will use it for the other two walls in the laundry and the closet. There are even more walls in the house calling for a new coat!

Then, I headed to Costco to get some of that

Did I mention this is a family favorite that all enjoy? It is pretty good for you too. Guess what? They did not have any. So, I settled for something a bit different. (Unfortunately, it was not as good:()

For some time, they were not carrying a family favorite.

Today, they had it and it ended up in my basket. My older son will be excited as he likes to eat these with his afternoon snack.

I needed a treat for me. I got this

Who knew? I am so excited. Right after American Idol, the kids are going to bed and I am going to dive into the magazine!!!

Rainy Day Attention

Today is just one of those rainy days. We, Buddy and I, got pretty wet just walking around the block this morning. The rain goes from a steady rain to a steady drizzle and it doesn't look like the sun is going to shine.

I've already been to the orthodontist with my youngest. All is good. He now has white and yellow rubber bands on. He is getting ready for the Vandy vs. Ole Miss game tomorrow! We are actually going to the game at Ole Miss. We are crossing our fingers that the 'Dores do us proud. I dropped Peanut off at school and headed to Home Depot. We needed more paint supplies to get the laundry room finished. I have no excuse but to paint and sing today!

When I sat down for a quick check of email, this four legged thing put his head in my lap. He loves rubs under the chin. I tried to use the Photo Booth to capture it. Each time the camera clicked, Buddy moved. You get the general idea. He is having a bad hair day after getting it wet this morning - the poodle in him starts to show!

For some reason Blogger does not want to download the photos! I'll try it again later in the day!

Finally Remembered

I went to the grocery store today and finally remembered to bring along my used grocery bags. We have lots in the garage. The Kroger here does not have a bin to recycle their bags. So, I thought I'd just re-use them. The baggers here give me strange looks when I ask them to add more to the bag. I guess they get complaints when bags break. I just don't want anymore bags. Even with the ones Buddy uses, we have plenty to keep us going for quite some time. I am thinking about using cloth bags for the groceries, but just don't know. I try to only go once a week to the grocery. I'll have to figure out how many cloth bags I may need. I had the thought about the trunk compartment things that are collapsable. I wonder if they'd fit into the cart. I could fill it with groceries and move it to the trunk. It might be better to have two smaller ones for easier lifting into the car. I don't think that is the winning answer, but I think there is a better answer than using lots of new grocery bags each week.

I did see a pattern where you use the bags as the "yarn" to knit a new bag. I just may have to pursue that...

Flipsides

Last night I was running into Walmart, a place I rarely go, to look for a safety compass (that is another story!) and these crackers jumped into my arms. What a novel idea. I bought the box and everyone tried them last night. We love them! We ate them plain straight out of the box. But, I can see the potential to use these in a variety of ways.

This morning it hit me that I needed to added this to my blog and I could not find a picture on the company website. They are that new. This release was just issued on January 22nd.

If you happen to see these. Let them tumble into your arms. They are good!

Phone Calls

I finally called my sister to wish her a belated Happy Birthday. It was good just to catch up and chat with her. My cell phone battery needed to be charged. So, I just sat on the floor while it charged. That was my excuse for not doing anything else while talking to her. I do tend to sit down when the phone rings. I find it can be really distracting to try to do more than one thing while talking. I use the bluetooth if I am ironing, but that is just not the same.

Later in the afternoon, I talked to another mom. Her son and my son are friends. It was so nice just to hear from her. There was a "formal" dance at school this weekend. My son did not go because of the swim meet. Her son went begrudgingly. He had fun, but is not into the dancing thing.

In between, I took Pumpkin to the orthodontist. They added all the brackets to his most recent adult teeth. I had my voice lesson and my throat was dry two seconds into it. I just pray I don't continue to make a fool of myself!!!

When the New Year hailed, I did not make a resolution. I did give lots of thought to what I really appreciate. One of those things was friends. I made a mental note to try to call a "lost" friend or send out an email. I haven't done the best job of actually contacting folks, but I do think about lots of friends daily. Making the phone call to my sister was reaching out to a friend:)

My Tuesday

Walked the dog first thing - in the rain. I was wishing it could have been about 10 degrees colder. I think it would have been freezing rain, but the boys would have enjoyed the Snow Day!

Spent a half hour prodding my older son to get ready for school. When he came down, he complained of a headache and a stomachache. I am a softy. I gave him some ibuprofen and sent him back to bed.

I did the dishes. Washed the dog's blanket. Why? So, it could get dirty when he came in from outside. We had to exercise him and the grass is all wet and muddy. His paws and belly were filthy.

I practiced my music for my lesson and for the group I belong to. I am not looking forward to my lesson tomorrow. The Italian progress is not as far as I would like...

I finally showered and headed to the library. I donated a couple books and lots of magazines to the library resale shop. They were grateful. My older son requested a specific book. They did not have it. And, the computer system was down for an upgrade. I was limited to only two books. I found a few for him. We'll see if he reads them.

I went on to the grocery. It was the usual experience. I could not find Muenster cheese. Go figure!

I finished a pair of slippers. I did say I was out of the slipper business, but I keep finding a few more that just need cozy toes.

We all ate dinner on our own. Tuesday nights are action packed. My pb&j was yummy with crunchy peanut butter.

We watched a few dirty jobs on Discovery Channel. They are gross!

Now, the day is done. Why do I feel like I don't have anything to show for it? What happened to the exercise? I need some motivation.

One of My Favorites

The other morning I had some neighbors over for a breakfast of sorts after the kids got on the bus. It was a nice, relaxing visit. I enjoyed the time with the other moms. I made bran muffins, cut up bagels, served cream cheese and this glorious fruit. To me, it doesn't get much better than a bowl of fruit like this~~

Swimming, Swimming in a swimming pool...

This weekend was a weekend of swimming. Not for me but for the Pumpkin. He had a wonderful swim meet. It started Friday night with the 200IM and the 500. He tied for 2nd with his friend and teammate. That is amazing given they touched the touch pad at the same time down to the hundredth of a second. It was a fun race to watch. He won the 500 looking very strong. It was a short night as he had to be at the pool for warmups at 6:30 am Saturday morning. This meet was a prelim/final meet where the top eight swimmers in his age group got to come back to the pool for finals at night. Saturday was a success too. He dropped time in his events winning the 100 Breast and completing a strong mile swim. Yes. He swam a mile! It makes me sick to think about. He was 10 seconds off a 13-14 year old qualifying time and he has 1.5 years to go before hitting THAT milestone. He did well at finals on Saturday night. It is great fun for them getting their name announced prior to getting on the block. On Sunday, the warm ups were a few minutes later. We got to sleep 30 minutes more!!! He had a great morning ~ again coming back for finals that evening. We are very proud of his accomplishments and the work ethic swimming is instilling in him.

There was one problem with the weekend. The chlorine level in the air was way too high. As a spectator, you even suffered from it. The swimmers were coughing. Needless to say, Pumpkin and I had rough nights last night sneezing, coughing, and grabbing tissues. We are very grateful for the holiday today. We are just taking it easy. I even finished my book! I have choir tonight leaving just a few hours to muster the energy and the ability to sing!

Happy Birthday, Rita!!

Happy Birthday to You!

I remember mom saying it was warm the day you were born, but it is cold here today. I hope you are "warm" all day - no matter what the weather is outside. May your day be wonderful and your year filled.

****Lots of luck to you in Vegas****

Happy Happy to You! And many many more!!!!

Braving the Cold

This morning was the coldest morning of the winter so far. It was in the upper 20's. Of course, Peanut had to ride his bike to school. I bundled up but was still cold. I ended up coming back and taking the dog for a short walk. The sun is shining bright and I had my spring concert on my Shuffle. It was invigorating and I actually felt a bit warmer by the time I got home.

Italian Music

Today, I had my voice lesson. Surprise! One of the best languages for singers to sing is Italian. The Italian language focuses on vowels making it a wonderful language to sing. I am now the proud owner of this book.My first song doesn't have lots of hard words to pronounce. It is supposed to be a romantic one. We'll see how well that works out:)

Footnote: I tried to post this on Wednesday, but Blogger was not cooperating with the photo download. I have actually practice the first piece and there is something there. It is just taking longer to memorize the words!!!

They Are Here! Yahoo!!!

They arrived this afternoon. They have been running ever since and the mound of laundry is dwindling. We got the laundry room painted, but need to do the part by the refrigerator nook. It looks great. The cabinet hardware is on the list for a change out. And, the laundry room would look even better with new countertops. Hint! Hint! ~That is if a certain someone drops in for a read.

You can see through the top of the washer. It is quite entertaining to watch it work.

Happy Birthday, Cloty!!!

Happy Birthday to You!
Happy Birthday to You!
Happy Birthday, Dear Cloty!
Happy Birthday to You!

My friend Cloty is one of a kind. I am so Blessed to call her a friend. This photo is from a visit to their house in Birmingham a few years ago. We met when Cloty lived here. Our children went to the same school with a few years in between. They moved away few years ago. As friendship goes when someone moves away, we don't talk as much, but I think of her often.

Cloty is a loving person. She has more energy than anyone I know. That energy and positive vibe just exudes from her. She lights up a room and makes a party when she enters.

She is a wonderful wife and a great mom.

She picked up the spinning habit and was off on that stationery bike. Watch out! She has a body to die for.

She is a motivator of the best kind. She motivates without even knowing it.

Cloty came to he USA from Honduras to study in Louisiana. She had to learn English and her studies. She is just a great person. The world is a better place with her in it!

Here's to Cloty ~ many, many more!!!

P.S. - For years, Cloty has teased my Peanut asking for hugs and telling him that she is going to wait to marry him. He'd get embarrassed. I'm not sure how many hugs she even got. He heard me talking to Cloty today and just grinned. When I got off the phone, he told me he wouldn't give out a hug - even on her birthday:(

UGH!

Today has just been one of those days -

I did not want to get up when the alarm went off. I am sure I had 30 minutes more of good sleep.
It was very cold and windy.
I got paint for the trim in the laundry room, but did not have time to paint.
I called the delivery folks. The washer and dryer won't be here until the end of the week - more trips to my inlaws.
I nibbled on lots of snacks.
I did not brave the cold and go out on my bike.
I tried to practice my music, but am just not into it.

Now, I am off to choir where I will have to sing that music. I won't be singing very loud!
Then, I get to go to sleep. Tomorrow has to be a better day!!!

Scarf Complete - Finally!

I finished the scarf for my sweetie! He is such the trooper. I wrapped the scarf up unfinished for him as a heartfelt Christmas present. It took me this long to finish it. I had to squeeze in a few other projects. And, knitting the scarf was pretty boring. If I do another one, I will need to spice it up for entertainment. After I started this one, I saw a scarf pattern where you knit it long-ways. I think that will be the next one I try. I just need to get the right needles.

The boys are avid Colts' fans. I used it as my excuse to just sit down and knit in the middle of the afternoon. My husband was kind enough to model it. It has been rather warm here. The scarf may not get much use:( I was thinking a date night. He could wear the scarf with the nice grey sweater I gave him. Who knows! I am sure he will get to wear it. He thought is was very soft. I told him he had to knit me one and he just laughed hysterically!!!

Laundry Room Transformation Begins

While I was at choir rehearsal this morning, my husband started the process to paint the laundry room. It has not been painted or been given any attention for the matter since we moved in. I was impressed when I walked in and he had moved the appliances and cleaned out the millions of lint bunnies that were hiding out. I need to go out on Saturday mornings more often!!! He patched some holes and removed switch plates while the Commodores were playing basketball. I wanted to watch the game. They were undefeated until today losing to Kentucky in Rupp arena after two OTs. It was pretty intense.

Anyway, after dinner, we got the paint out and started the first coat on the walls. We did all of the laundry room with the exception of the spare refrig nook as we don't have room to move frig yet. We'll do that after the new appliances are installed. We went with the standard color in our house. I just love the Benjamin Moore Historic Colors. For the hallways and open areas of the house we used HC80. (Select the Historical Color collection, sort by number and select #80). It is a neutral with just a bit of pizzazz. It is named Bleeker Beige. I can tell I am going to like the laundry room. We hope to get the second coat on tomorrow. As I was painting, I was brainstorming away with other things we need to do. It is exhilarating and amazing what a coat of paint can do! We have to do the trim, but should be able to get it together by Monday afternoon.

Bootie Covers

I am patting myself on the back. This morning the temperature was 37 degrees F and I decided to head out on my bike. For Christmas, a year ago, and for Christmas, this year, I got bootie covers. I had used them so much - not! - my husband forgot that he gave them to me previously. In an effort to keep my feet warm, I pulled them out and fit them to my cycling shoes.

You have to cut the rubber on the bottom so the pedal clip shows through permitting the ability to clip-in to the bike pedal.

They are quite the fashion statement. The cycling shoes have lots of vents. These booties cover those vents preventing the cold air from freezing your toes!

I am proud to say I did ride. With these love booties, I road about 12 miles. My feet were perfectly warm!

The weather was cooler, but the sun was shining and the wind was not too bad. I layered up and did okay. I wore a headband around my ears under my helmet. I learned that kind of hurt my head. I wore my full-fingered gloves and my hands got too hot half way through the ride. I am still doing lots of self-motivation while I ride. I just keep telling myself to keep pedaling. I forgot my water. Not a good thing. Even in the cold, I needed to drink. I won't do that again. I am physically tired this afternoon, but do feel like I've pushed lots of oxygen through my body. AHHH!

Rainbow Forest

Last week when my nephews were here, we started this puzzle. We only got as far as separating the pieces, turning them right-side up, and completing most of the border. My one nephew kept saying it was going to take a bazillion days to complete this puzzle. It was difficult at the onset, but fairly easy once you focused on an animal. We finished it last night. I love the mental challenge of assembling a puzzle. We spread it out on the dining room table. Each time you walked by, you could just do a piece. For me, it is addicting and I find I just can't do one!

Here our some pictures of our creation. Peanut helped capture the completed photos.

I think we are going to glue this one together and hang it in the playroom. The colors are perfect and the spaceship puzzle currently hanging has seen its better day.

Finishing the puzzle last night was a bit sentimental. When we lived in PA, before kids when the snow hit, we pulled out the puzzles. We'd hunker down and go to work. It was fun. In between shoveling, we'd come back to the puzzle.

This one has inspired me. I'll have to look for another one!

Library Stop

A few days ago, I stopped into the library to get a collection of science fair books. Yes! It is that time of the year and science fair projects need to start coming to fruition for our resident 7th grader. I am not a big fan of the projects. When I was in 7th or maybe 8th grade, I was a rebel. I remember doing some sort of project on density and presenting the poster to the class. Participation in the science fair was optional. But, the teacher put so much weight on participation, lots of kids did it to raise their grade. I had the luxury of resting on my laurels. My grade was high enough that I'd keep my A without doing the silly science fair. I could not understand standing next to a poster talking about a something most people already knew.

Now, I have a science minded brain and do not think all science fairs are silly. I was even a judge for a science fair at Lehigh University. That was interesting!

As of late, I think the projects have gone over the top. The kids should have to participate, but with limitations. They should not be allowed to spend a dime on supplies. They should be creative enough to use what extras are around the house. Who really cares if the project is on a science board or on an old cardboard box? They should think to change something in their everyday lives - the toothpaste taste, the chlorine smell, the wobbling chair leg. The scientific method can be applied to just about everything. All you need to do is ask a question and change some variables observing the impact. I think I am out there with my idea of science fairs. I think they should be very simple enabling the student to do it all. How do you explain the high school winners with projects the average person can not even pronounce? I remember one from last year was on eyeballs. Where did the student have to go to do that? And, how much did the student really do? Again, I digress from the topic of the post.

I got the science fair books and I got some books for myself. I have been quite busy with the knitting and did not want a good story to interfere. Now, I have interference!

This book by Connolly has to have cupcakes for all. I am thinking about some sort of dinner cupcake. Wouldn't that make them smile?!

I've seen this book in the stores and it looks like a relatively easy read.

This one we saw when we were out West this summer. It looks like a slower read but very insightful into the wine industry. There were some sales of private wineries while we were there. Interesting!

I know I won't get them all read within the two week limit, but I love the excitement a book can generate. Just having them here and knowing that I can squeeze in some time to read is a thrill. I have still have the endless knitting to do. I'll have to work that in around a few pages! And, I will have to monitor the science fair progress!!! Yipee!

Maytag Me, Baby!

About six months ago, my hubby and I ran to the hardware store to pick up a light bulb or some other trivial item. Seizing the opportunity for a "date," I asked if we could just walk around the hardware store. I worked in a hardware store for many years and still feel all the creative energy when I walk in. He amused me and we walked around. I started an endless list in my head of potential projects for the house. We paused by the appliances. The washers and dryers caught my attention. My creative juices were flowing and I had re-configured our laundry room in my head right there in the store. We left the store, but for a week or so I dreamed about stacking the washer and dryer, moving the cabinets, and creating a computer center in the laundry room. We decided to table the project until our current appliances went kaput. There was no reason to buy a new ones when the current ones were cleaning our clothes like they should.

Well! The day came. On Tuesday afternoon, I went to transfer my second load of laundry to the dryer and it was really wet. The washer drained but will not spin. That is as far as I investigated the issue. We've had these appliances since 1992! We have gotten our money's worth out of them. It is time to move on.

My husband consulted Consumer Reports. When I came home from choir last night, he stated we just needed to replace the washer with the CR Best Buy. Now, I love this man dearly. But, he is the most practical human being on the face of this earth. I went through a frustrated phase as we don't seem to tackle any "cool" projects. I wanted something fun! This morning he told me that he really did not care what we did as long as the budget could handle it. That was all I needed. I was off to an array of appliance stores this afternoon. Afterall, how long can we last without a washer?

I did some soul searching and researching. The layout of our laundry room is such that the washer is on the right side of the dryer with a cabinet and countertop separating them. All of the front loader washers have doors that open to the the left. The hinges are not interchangeable. If the washer and dryer were stacked and both opened to the left, then it would be next to impossible to reach around into the cabinet for detergent. That solved it! We needed to stick with a top loader.

I wanted to make sure the appliances were energy efficient. I am all in favor of saving water and utilities. I surfed the internet a bit too. What did we do before the web? We decided on a Maytag Bravos pair from Lowe's. We will get free delivery. The current special was a 10% savings when you buy the pair. Sold!! The creative piece here is that we ordered the appliances in black. Too cool! They will sparkle in the laundry room. I am so excited. The washer has a new technology minimizing water usage. It cleans without a center agitator and makes room for more clothes. The engineer in me can't wait to see how it all works. Wouldn't you know that I just bought two bottles of liquid Tide the other day. I do hope Kroger will let me swap it out for the He version.

Our "old" machines served us well. They are one of the first big appliances we purchased together. We are on to a new chapter...the new machines are scheduled for delivery on Monday. Can I make it until then? I think we may have to hit the laundromat. Is there even one close by?

Here is a sneak peak at my new Bravos ~

Podcasts

This morning - before the storms rolled in - I took Buddy for a walk. I am growing to love the Ipod. Today I used the Shuffle and downloaded some podcasts from Vanderbilt Athletics. I don't think you can copy the podcasts into this blog. I'll have to research that...

They interview the coach and a few players after each basketball game. Vandy played a strong UMass team on Saturday. I am really impressed with Coach Stallings. His choice of words is very impressive. He never smears the win in the losing team's face. Shane Foster is the star player at Vanderbilt. That boy is a team player. During his interview, he repeatedly referred to the team. That to me, is great coaching. You can't play basketball of this game of life by yourself!

The 'Dores are undefeated so far. The conference play starts tomorrow with South Carolina coming to Memorial Gym.

Split

Tonight is the last college football game of the season. The battle for the BCS National Championship is between LSU and OSU. Who to route for? I was raised in that buckeye state and have a certain loyalty to OSU. My niece and nephew went there too. Peanut wore his Ohio State t-shirt to school today. He had his scarlet and grey shoes on too. Pumpkin wore his purple, gold and green collared shirt. It has always reminded me of Mardi Gras and is close enough to LSU. My in-laws both went to LSU. I whipped together a quick scarf for my mother-in-law. It was fun to make using US 35 needles and four yarns. I wasn't sure about the fringe, but think it adds pizzazz to it. It is a bit over the top, but just right to show the Tiger spirit. Last week at this time, it was freezing cold. Today, it is very warm - not much need for a scarf - and a heavy one at that!

Ultimately, we hope the game is good. I'll be listening and knitting away. The boys will get to watch part of the game having to read about the rest of it in the sports pages tomorrow.

Last week, we ran into a family all dressed in their OSU garb in downtown Memphis. They were making their trek to the game. Their son is the back up center. I'll have to look for him!

Christmas - Come and Gone!

I can hardly believe my last post was on 12/18! The time has flown by filled with wonderful memories, good food and many Blessings. We are getting ready to get back into the real routine. The kids start back to school on Monday and we will be off and running.

I thought I'd share some highlights from the last couple of weeks ~

We made the trek to Grandma's house. I spent one evening trying to teach mom and kids to knit. It was a classic as mom only crochets. Next time we will have her teach the boys to do that!

We spent Christmas Eve with my family. We missed Rick and his family as they were skiing in Colorado. We continue to keep them in our prayers that in 2008 they may find healing from the loss of baby Loden.

The highlight of the road trip was mass on Christmas Day. We went back to the little church we were married in. The pastor is the man who married us. He is one of a kind and a tradition we have kept alive for 16 years. We aren't the only ones who come back to that church. There were lots of folks there from various places. Fr. Schappelle makes a point of recognizing each one. We always wait for our recognition. He tells the parishioners that there are two among us that were born at St. Luke's in Bethlehem. He waits for the reaction before stating Bethlehem, PA! Gotta love it!

We drove home on Christmas Day evening in record time. Santa got our letter and came a night late. We celebrated our Christmas on the 26th. The boys had a wonderful time opening presents. I fell short and had to wrap up the scarf for my husband - not finished! He opened the knitting needles and all! Fortunately, he still loves me and is still waiting for the scarf.

We continued the break with a visit from David's sister and family. They live outside of Philadelphia. She had not been home for quite some time. The cousins enjoyed the time together as did the family.

We celebrated my mother-in-law's 75th birthday on New Year's Eve. She was thrilled to have so much of the family with her. My sister-in-law made a wonderful carrot cake. I still have to get the recipe. We toasted to the New Year a few hours early as we were all such party animals! The boys and I watched the ball drop on Eastern Standard time and then again on Central Time!

Next, my sister and her family visited. The boys played and played. We took in a University of Memphis basketball game. It was fun to watch as they are ranked 2nd in the nation! It would have been more fun to watch those 'Dores, but they don't play here:( We grabbed some burgers before the game at a local place. The food is great and you get to shoot toothpicks on the ceiling. Whoever thought that up did not realize how much fun kids could have with it!

My sister et al left yesterday. The peanut had a basketball game and Pumpkin went to swim practice. Today, the boys each have a friend over and are taking advantage of the last bit of day light playing football. It was pretty cloudy all day, but the cold weather has moved on with the high of 70 today and tomorrow! We'll be riding our bikes to school!

I finished up lots of knitting projects. I think I made about a dozen pair of slippers as gifts this holiday season. I still have about three more pairs that I'd like to send to friends. I do have the knitting bug and my list of things I want to try keeps getting longer. I finally opened up the Sock book I got in early December. I think I may try to tackle a pair of socks. I am so intrigued by the self-striping yarn. We'll see what the New Year brings!!!
